hey Ken,
did you ever locate the formula for horsepower/speed? i would be interested in that as well.
thanks,
Jared

Dear Ken

Thank you for your reply. My enquiry was a bit premature. I should have
read on, as the answer came a few pages down in your book.

I'd be really interested in the speed formula for displacement boats
and will come back to check whether you have managed to find it and
post it.

Thank you!

Yes - it is in feet. Here's the math for my new boat (www.nordhavn68.com):

LWL - 63' 2'
Square root of LWL = 7.95
Multiplied by 1.3 = 10.33

So, in other words, I should be able to do 10.33 knots before the power required to go faster starts becoming exponential.

Somewhere I have the formula for computing the horsepower requirement for a full displacement boat at different speeds. If I find it, I will post it. The interesting thing is that the horsepower requirements are so low. Moving my boat at 8 knots only requires about 140 HP, and that load is split between two engines.

Dear Ken

I now have your book and find it difficult to put down (surprise, surprise). It really is an excellent read.

One question, if I may. You include a formula for the maximum speed of
a displacement hull ==> 1.3 x square root of LWL. Is that LWL in
feet?
